Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Wusthof Culinar 8-Inch Cook's KnifeCustomer Review: A solid investment Summary: 5 Stars
With marriage pending, I've had a lot of decisions to make regarding kitchen items. I recently purchased this knife, and could not be happier with its performance. My mother has always had cutco knives, which I considered to be of excellent quality, until this knife arrived. It is razor sharp, and cuts through vegetables as a hot knife through butter. I was surprised by the weight of the knife itself. It is heavier than most, largely due to the stainless steel handle, though comfortably so. The stainless steel appeals to me as an aesthetic property. One small caution to those of you who are neat freaks... If you plan on displaying your knives in a block on the counter, it will take a small amount of work to keep the handles fingerprint free, as with most stainless steel, they show every smudge. Barring that, consumer reports rated these knives excellent, as they did with the grand prix and classic lines from Wusthof (all of these lines have the exact same blade, merely a different handle). Henckels also did well, and Twin Select, their stainless line, scored higher than Wusthof, though I feel it is merely a matter of preference. Make sure that you try it out before you buy it. It should feel comfortable. Wusthof.com lists stores at which you can "test-drive" their knives before purchase. I would highly recommend doing so.
Description of Wusthof Culinar 8-Inch Cook's KnifeFor those occasions when you have to separate meat from the bone, raw or cooked, this knife will is what you need. The tip resembles a delicately bowed half spear; its point lies on the end of a straight spine where it's met by a cutting edge that rocks up to a 40 degree angle to the tip. This design allows for deep accurate cuts. Elegant satin-finish handles sculpted from 18/10 stainless steel distinguish Culinar knives from Wüsthof's other cutlery lines. Otherwise Culinar knives embody all the virtues of other Wüsthof knives that have earned the German manufacturer world renown. The principal parts of a Wüsthof knife--blade, bolster, and tang--are forged from a single piece of high-carbon stainless steel, and the blade is precisely tapered from bolster to tip and from back to hand-honed edge. Blades and beautifully formed bolsters are not as thick as some knives'. As a result, despite their heft, strength, and durability, Wüsthof knives are pleasingly delicate and marvelously balanced in action. This 8-inch cook's knife (or chef's knife) is the ideal size for most cooks. Its curved blade makes rocking through a chopping, dicing, or mincing task a joy. Like all fine knives, this cook's knife should be hand washed. --Fred Brack
