I've had a small starter set of Wusthof Classic Knives (8" Chef, 10" Carver & 6" Utility) for right around 40 yrs now. I've always washed and dried them by hand and stored them in a knife block. I first had a little problem with the utility knife. After many years of good service the point began to bend. I tried gently bending it back but was never sucessful. It continued to get worse and finally about 1/4 inch of the tip broke off. I continued to use the knife for years. Then the same thing started to happen with my Chef's knife. It bent slightly but no further degradation occured. Recently the carving knife began doing the same thing. So, I didn't know if it was a mfg defect or what. I have other knives that I treat the same way and store in the same knife block but I've never had that kind of problem with any of them.

I was in a cutlery store recently and mentioned this to the owner. She suggested that I call Wusthof. Even though the knives were ~40 yrs old, she didn't think the knives should do that. Even though that store was not a Wusthof dealer, she felt that quality knives like that should last a lifetime. So, I looked them up on the internet and called. They told me to send in the knives and they would see what they could do. I didn't have any receipts after 40 yrs, but sent them in anyway with a note of explanation. Well, today I received in the mail a brand new set of these three knives (street price over $300 today). No questions. No hassles. Wow! I didn't think that there were still companies around like that. Anyway, here's my vote for Wusthof customer service! I won't think twice about dealing with them again. Good Company. Great service.

Description of Wusthof Classic 8-Inch Cook's Knife

This knife is produced by one of the most respected cutlery manufacturers in the world. Made of high carbon stainless-steel, it will not stain, pit or rust and will hold its edge. The metal used to construct the blade extends to the back of the handle which gives the knife perfect balance. The bolster which is the point that rests between your fingers and the blade is smooth and comfortable which makes this knife a pleasure to use when dicing, slicing and mincing. Wusthof's newest state of the art technology incorporates a new computer controlled method for putting the edge on Classic knives. This technology allows for an exacting edge from the tip of the knife down to the heel of the knife. With this newer precision, the knives are made sharper to 14 degrees per side for a total of 28 degrees. The knives are now sharper and this refinement increases the sharpness retention because exacting angles and edges last longer than edges sharpened by hand. The result is a knife that is 30% sharper and the ICP (Initial Cutting Performance) lasts twice as long..
